Katrina Salave
Philippines to England

I’m a Civil Engineer from the Philippines. Through the Bridges Programme, I aim for career growth via continuous learning. I love my first year in the UK as it exposed me to diverse teams and travel opportunities. Cooking, table tennis, and yoga are my passions.

Listen to Katrina's podcast!

I’m working as a Quality Engineer in HS2 Viaduct Precast Factory. The first time I arrived at the site office where I was assigned, it was a little bit overwhelming and exciting for me. Overwhelming that on my first day I was introduced to my colleagues, but of course it took weeks for me to remember everyone’s name. I’m excited too, because my previous project is almost similar to the precast segment, but I’m excited about what the differences are and what new things I can learn in the project.

On a day-to-day basis, I do quality work, doing site inspections, ensuring that the approved process is being followed. I’m also able to work with quality documents, ensuring that not only the site production but also all necessary documents are updated and monitored. I enjoyed working with my team as we all came from different countries with different cultures, which I really like because we’re able to share some cultures, discover differences and how they do things based on their culture.

Aside from quality work, I was so happy that I was able to learn and get trained and got my license for driving a mobile elevated work platform just like a cherry picker. One of the photos that I attached was when we reached 500 out of 1000 segments, my colleagues and I had a good time and that’s when I started to know most of my colleagues.

Aside from our package, I was able to visit Tunnel Precast Factory, Viaduct and HPC with my Bridges colleagues.

When I arrived in England, the first place I visited was Buckingham Palace. The next few days, we went to see Big Ben, the London Eye and Tower Bridge.

While I was in England, I was able to visit some countries in Europe. I made my first solo trip to Rome. I tried a lot of restaurants and went to historical places such as Trevi Fountain, the Sistine Chapel and the Colosseum. Last July, I was able to travel to Amsterdam and see the beautiful countryside of Holland. My last trip was with my colleagues, and we went to Edinburgh, Scotland. We went to see Edinburgh Castle and hiked to Arthur’s seat.

During weekends, I try to do as many different activies. Some weekends me and my friends would stay out late in London. During summer, we went hiking and went to different beaches in England.

I’m originally from Canada and Egypt and I’ve got the chance to work on North East link in Melbourne. As you can guess, I like travelling and discovering new cultures, but always carrying music with me!
