Omar Elbaradie
England to Australia

I’m originally from Canada and Egypt and I’ve got the chance to work on North East link in Melbourne. As you can guess, I like travelling and discovering new cultures, but always carrying music with me!

Listen to Omar's podcast!

Such a surprise! I saw Kangaroos next to my offices last week!

On this project I discovered the world of groundworks engineering and D-walls.
It’s something I have never worked on before and I learned tremendously over the course of the year from the process to the machinery involved.

Working on the commercial aspects has been very interesting for me since we have a vast difference between what was considered in Tender and the latest IFC designs in terms of design, geology and working hours.

The work culture in Victoria was different to my previous experience. Every second Monday the site is closed. Also, all the works stop immeadiately as soon as it rains (the rule is 3 drops of water on your phone), which is something I was not used to in the previous project in the UK where it rains a lot.

As soon as I landed in Melbourne, I was impressed how everything was still lively and dynamic at 2AM. I love travelling and exploring new places and you can never run out of things to do in Australia. Nidale and myself travelled to the great ocean road, Sydney, Brisbane and the Gold Coast. My favourite was the great Ocean Road and all the beautiful scenery along the way. I took many photos but the photos don’t do it justice.

I will definetely come back to visit Australia when I get the chance to travel to all the other destinations I didn’t get the opportunity to visit yet. I was surprised of how friendly the kangaroos and wallabies are.

Melbourne is tremendously multi-cultural and offers a great diversity of cuisines which is exciting for a foodie like myself. Melbourne has a rich art culture and there is always an impressive mural to explore or a play to attend in the many theathres here. Melbourne is also dubbed the sporting capital of Australia with so many to offer to Sports enthusiasts. Unfortunately I missed the Australian Open but I was fortunate to attend the Women’s World cup in which the Matildas (Australian Women’s team) almost made it to the final.
