A civil engineer from Hong Kong, I love learning new skills. Thanks to this programme, I can participate in different projects at various stages of the construction process. I love playing football, exploring nature, and discovering unique cultures.
I have worked as a senior technical engineer in VSL UK technical department this year, taking part mainly in the structures repair and maintenance business line. I had the opportunities to work on different interesting bridges maintenance projects and even tendering for a complex aboveground monument structure.
It was a really challenging experience for me as I had worked mostly on underground structures in the past. Yet, it was all so rewarding that I have learnt a lot technically and broadened my career exposure with various work scopes.
At work, I spent most of my time in developing temporary work solutions for the ongoing projects, carrying out technical studies for tenders and communicating with clients and designers. I also travelled to different sites within the UK to carry out structural inspections on existing bridges.
Outside my daily works, I have also taken the chances to enrich my professional knowledge on other engineering topics. I visited some other large scale and complex projects such as HS2, and attended technical seminars hold by different engineering insititutions. I also contributed to the career devlopemnt of other engineers in the company by sharing with them my experience in obtaining the chartership as a civil engineer with ICE.
Living in the capital city of the UK this year allowed me to explore a lot of the leisure and cultural sides of the country. Other than trying out different restaurants and pubs, spending hours and hours in museums, and watching different fantastic musicals, I also spent many of the weekends doing day trips to other cities outside London.
One of the completed items on my bucket list was watching the Premier League clash between Chelsea and Liverpool at Stamford Bridge Stadium. It was such a thrilling game to watch, and the live atmosphere of this kind of top class match is really crazy and fun to be in. I have also spent qutie a number of evenings after work playing football games with the locals.
Being so close to other parts of Europe, I took the opportunity to travel to various countries during my holidays, including France, Belgium, the Netherlands and Greece. I will never forget the beautiful summer and the elegant architectures in all these places.
