UK to Canada

Originally from France and Tunisia, I’m a Civil Engineer who’s worked on major UK projects. From a young age, I’ve always been fascinated by how structures fit together. Turning plans into reality fuels my passion.

One step • January 2026

I had the chance to start my Bridges adventure in Vancouver as a Field Engineer on the Fraser River Tunnel Project. It took me a few weeks to settle in and adapt to my new work environment. While Canada and the UK have a lot in common, I was surprised by how friendly and open Canadians are, both at work and in daily life. The positivity and work-life balance really stand out compared to my experience in the UK.

I’m currently working full-time in the office during the preparatory works of the Design and Build phase, as site works are scheduled to start next summer. The first few months were challenging, as I had never contributed to the design phase or been involved in such a long preparatory period before. In my previous experience, we were already in the production phase, so I needed to quickly find my way, adapt, and seek guidance from experienced colleagues around me. Despite this, it has been incredibly rewarding. I’ve had the privilege to collaborate with multiple departments – from estimation to planning, design, procurement, and methods – and I’ve learned a great deal from everyone.

On a personal note, the tipping culture was a bit of a shock at first, as I wasn’t used to tipping 15-20% in Europe! I’ve also discovered how much locals love the outdoors – hiking, cycling, skiing – which has inspired me to explore more of Vancouver’s nature on weekends.

Overall, this relocation has been both challenging and rewarding, helping me grow professionally and personally. I’m excited to see how the project progresses and to continue learning throughout this journey.
