Guilhem de Langlais
Hong Kong to Ivory Coast

I am a French engineer with a geological background but looking to expand my skills by trying new jobs. I am curious and I love discovering new cultures with my wife and 2 kids. Travelling is also the occasion for me to fish new species around the world.

Two step • December 2024

Till now I used to be a geotechnical engineer, dealing with tunnel and underground structures. So moving onto a project like Abidjan Métro is a daily discovery. Fun fact : I’m French but it’s actually the first time I work in French language! So I need to learn all the vocabulary related to construction which can be very technical, precise and… old! In Abidjan, culture – including working culture – and pace are very different from Hong Kong.

One of the first task I was assigned was to take over the structural investigations of the existing bridges on which the metro will circulate. I had to check the needs for reinforcement, including some very specific and technical tests under the deck of a bridge, in the middle of a motorway.

This was a bit of a challenge because I had to organise the visit of various sub-contractors both from France and Ivory-Coast, for a week, to work together in the middle of a motorway, onto cherry pickers… But everything went (relatively not!) smoothly and happily we got the results the design team needed!

Here in Abidjan, the weather is pleasant and quite steady throughout the year – expect a couple of rainy months – so we decided to buy a small boat – ‘Chocokoh’ – with some friends. This allows us to spend some good time during the week-ends, enjoying wakeboarding and picnics on islands.

Fishing is also quite good at sea, even if I nearly got lost in the sea after a motor breakdown 20 miles offshore on a friend’s boat! We also took part in a tennis tournament with my wife, which we unfortunately didn’t win…
